Microsoft done with Encarta as Wikipedia dominates the market
Looks like Microsoft has given up to Wikipedia as they have announced their decision to close down its Encarta online encyclopedia.
Microsoft Encarta would be closed down in October this year in most markets around the world.
The company said in a statement: “The category of traditional encyclopedias and reference material has changed. People today seek and consume information in considerably different ways than in years past.”
Microsoft had entered this market with Encarta in 1993 as they decided to took on Encyclopedia Britannica.
The service is a paid one just like Britannica and they just fail to match the usability and convenience of the open source free rival Wikipedia.
