Last.fm to become a paid service for most web users
Last.fm has announced that they would soon begin charging for their online music delivery service.
They would be charging web users who are outside UK, USA and Germany.
A company representative spoke about this new development: “In order to keep providing the best radio service on the web, we need to ask our listeners from countries other than USA, UK and Germany to subscribe for three Euros per month.”
Last.fm co-founder Richard Jones added that users would be allowed to hear 30 tracks before they would be required to sign up to the service.
Most of the site’s content would remain free for all users.
Last.fm is owned by CBS. It said that they can generate enough advertising revenues in the above mentioned three markets to pay for the media rights.
They host media content from all the four major music companies: Universal Music Group, Sony/BMG, Warner and EMI.
