IBM Workplace to bring support for Open Document standard

More support is coming in for the Open Document standard as IBM has announced their plans to support this documentation format with their Workplace application. They would as a result join the likes of Sun Microsystems’ StarOffice and OpenOffice.org to support this standard. The company announced this upcoming support for the ODF standard in an upcoming release of its Workplace Managed Client application.

This updated version of the productivity tools in Version 2.6 of the Workplace Managed Client is expected to be released early next year. And users would be able to import, export, and rewrite files saved in Version 1.0 of the ODF standard. The applications in the Workplace productivity editor tools include word processing, presentation graphics, and spreadsheets.

Microsoft practically dominates the office suites application market with their MS Office application worldwide. However, times are changing and many government agencies have shown interests in alternative products providing support for open source documentation standard. IBM believes that the lower cost of moving to open source application is also a big pull away from Microsoft based products for these corporations and organizations.

ODF 1.0 has been recently ratified by OASIS and is based on XML based specifications. It is an open source standard and users will not have to rely on any particular suite to access and modify the content in this standard.
