Google working on Offline Gmail on iPhone and Android

Google has displayed a working prototype of Gmail that can be accessed offline on mobile devices.

The company displayed the technology working on Apple iPhone and an Android powered mobile device.

Google said that the technology uses three emerging Web standards including W3C Database specification and W3C App Cache specification.

It makes use of an offline database which is used to store online information for offline usage.

Google Vice president of engineering Vic Gundotra spoke about the technology: “You’ll note that it’s very, very fast because it’s using that local database.”

The search engine giant said that they aim to make available this functionality in all the modern mobile devices.

Google recently enabled the offline functionality on Gmail on desktops through the Gmail Labs. Desktop browsers can use Gears technology to make available Offline Gmail.
