Windows Mobile Phones to be called Windows Phones

Microsoft has announced that they are re-branding their windows mobile platform. The phones powered by Windows Mobile OS would simply be called Windows Phones now instead of Windows Mobile Phones.

The company had previously called their mobile platform Windows CE and Pocket PC.

Looks like they are now taking a leaf out of Apple’s booklet. Apple claims that the iPhone comes with a version of OS X rather than a separate mobile OS.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer spoke about this new development: “It’s a mouthful to say, ‘You want a Windows Mobile phone?’”

The company also showcased their upcoming update to Windows Mobile: Windows Mobile 6.5.

Microsoft said that Windows Mobile 6.5 would include a revamped, touch-optimized user interface.

Microsoft also unveiled My Phone service which is very much inspired from Apple MobileMe sync service.

The company also announced Windows Marketplace which is again inspired from the Apple App Store.

Windows Mobile 6.5 would be available on mobile devices later this year. HTC Touch Diamond2 and the LG-GM730 are two of the first devices which are likely to come with this new mobile OS.
