Mozilla donates for Ogg development

Makers of Firefox web browser, Mozilla has made a donation of $100,000 to help in the development of open standards-based technology OGG for web video.

They are collaborating with the Wikimedia Foundation on this venture.

Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight are the two proprietary technologies which exist in this space.

Mozilla and the Wikimedia Foundation are working on the open source alternative for delivering video on the web.

The development of the Ogg technology would be coordinated by the Wikimedia Foundation. Wikipedia is already using this open source format for almost all of its rich media content.

Wikimedia deputy director Erik Möller spoke about this initiative: “Open standards for audio and video are important because they can be used by anyone for any purpose without royalties, and can be inspected and improved by an open community. Today, video and audio on the web are dominated by proprietary technologies, most frequently patent-encumbered codecs wrapped into closed-source player widgets. Wikimedia and Mozilla want to help to build a web where video and audio are first class citizens: easy to use and manipulate by anyone, without compulsory royalty schemes or other barriers to participation.”

Mozilla Firefox and Opera are two web browsers which are already in the process of supporting this standard.
