Wikipedia gets the required funds for ad-free operations
Wikipedia has a great fan base. This has been proved by the fact that the non profit organization running the popular online encyclopedia has met its $6 million fund raising goal for fiscal 2008.
The Wikimedia Foundation said it has raised $6.2 million.
It took a while and some effort from the site’s founder, Jimmy Wales who had to personally appeal to the readers to donate to the project.
Wikipedia is a great example of how online collaboration can help create a useful resource which is freely accessible.
The service has no form of advertising and completely depends upon user donations for functioning.
Wales said in a note on the service thanking the donors. He said: “You have proven that Wikipedia matters to you, and that you support our mission: to bring free knowledge to the planet, free of charge and free of advertising.”
