Microsoft alerts users to upgrade to the latest Macromedia Flash Player
Macromedia has just posted an update to their very popular plug-in for web browsers, Flash Player. Microsoft has now posted a security advisory directing users of its Windows XP, XP SP2, 95, 98, and Me to the third-party patches. This happens to be Microsoft’s first security bulletin for a third -party product and goes on to show how important Flash has become for the routine users of the windows operating system.
Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement to a media group: “Microsoft recommends that customers who use Macromedia Flash Player follow the guidance documented in Macromedia’s Security Bulletin to help protect themselves.†This becomes even more important because Flash is re-distributed by Microsoft in several of the Operating Systems developed by the company.
This flaw existing in the older versions of the flash player is serious enough and can give malicious hackers the ability to grab control of a PC running the player. Microsoft has also listed several workarounds that can be applied in lieu of patching; this range from preventing the Flash ActiveX control from running in Internet Explorer to removing the player. More details are here.
