Gartner says move to Windows Vista in 2008
Software giant Microsoft is all set to launch their next generation operating system Windows Vista next year. However, analysts Gartner have other opinions and suggestions for the corporate users. They suggest that most companies can ignore upgrading to the latest operating system by Microsoft until 2008.
There is a good reason not to move immediately. Most of the new improvements and offerings of Windows Vista can be accessed easily by using third party software. Microsoft claims that the updated Windows OS would bring better security to the workstations and servers. These enhancements can already be applied to the systems using third party anti-virus, anti-spyware, and firewall products.
In addition, the new web browser Internet Explorer 7 would also be made available for the current generation Windows XP operating system. However, some of the enhanced security functionalities would require Vista to be the OS. For this, they have suggested that third party browsers like Mozilla Firefox and Opera are already pretty secure and corporate users can avoid upgrading to Vista just for an updated browser solution.
Another enhancement promised by Windows Vista is the improved searching capabilities. Windows XP suffers from poor searching solutions. However, desktop search products from companies like Google, Yahoo!, and Microsoft itself provide more than adequate solutions for making searching easier on current generation machines making upgrading to Vista another fruitless task.
Gartner suggests that corporations should bring in Vista on their new purchases and should consider a complete shift only after around 2 years of the launch in 2008. That period would give them enough time to test out the reliability and stability of the new product and most of the bugs and issues in Vista should be sorted out by then.
