Open Source Symbian on track for launch in 2010

Symbian Foundation has stated that they are well on track to launch the open source edition of Symbian mobile OS in 2010.

The Symbian Foundation was formed after Nokia acquired the rest of the stake in the company and announced that it would be released as an OSS offering.

Nokia wants Symbian to become the leading mobile operating system in the market. It faces competition from Google Android platform, Apple iPhone Mac OS X and Windows Mobile.

Nokia, Motorola, NTT DoCoMo, LG Electronics, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, AT&T are some of the existing members of this foundation.

AT&T recently said that they are looking at unifying the mobile OS for company branded mobile phones in the future. Symbian might be that operating system.
