Fedora claims to have as many as 9.5 million users
Red Hat’s Fedora community claims that their version of the Linux OS is used by around 9.5 million users worldwide.
They arrived to this number by calculating the number of unique IPs that access their servers for updates.
This number is not very accurate as IPs can be deceptive.
Multiple computers can access the internet using the same IP. And a single computer can also access their servers using separate IPs.
Paul Frields, Fedora’s project leader said in a statement about their findings: “The total number of users has always been an incredibly difficult number to measure. If you total up all the unique IP’s … on Fedora 7, 8 and 9, it adds up to about 9.5 million boxes right now.”
In comparison, Ubuntu claims to have around 8 million users based on their calculations.
The Fedora community is all set to release the latest version of their OS, Fedora 10.
