MySQL AB delivers MySQL 5.0

MySQL AB has released what is the production ready version of their hugely popular open source database solution in the form of MySQL 5.0. This version was scheduled to be released between October and November and the company met its deadline well. The update brings a lot of new features which have been standards since quite sometime on the rival product offerings.

Some of these new features are triggers, views, and stored procedures and as a result, the company is touting as the most important update to the Open Source offering till date. They are however, not changing the pricing of this update to their consumers. They have in fact two kinds of licenses for their customers, customers can download the software for free under the open-source General Public License, or they can pay for a commercial license.

And of course, they run support and service programs for which they charge. MySQL Network charge range from €245 (US$293) per server per year to €3,995 per server per year, depending on the level of support. The company has said that More than 30 enterprise software and database tools vendors have said they will certify their products for the new release. These include big names like Business Objects SA, Novell Corp., Informatica Corp., and SAP AG.

MySQL AB has provided this software product for download for various platforms like Linux, Windows, Solaris, Mac OS X, FreeBSD, HP-UX, IBM AIX 5L and others.
