Bittorrent user convicted for sharing file on the internet

This one might be the first case of its kind. Hong Kong police has arrested a man and convicted him of copyright infringement for sharing movie files on the p2p network of Bittorrent. As per a report in the Taiwanese English-language newspaper The China Post, Chan Nai-Ming was found guilty of distributing three Hollywood films using BitTorrent’s peer-to-peer file sharing technology.

He is accused of sharing and letting other people download movies like “Miss Congeniality”, “Daredevil” and “Red Planet” from his computers on the internet. He was initially arrested in January 2005 by the customs officers. He had pleaded not guilty to copyright infringement but was convicted after a trial, which lasted just 4 days.

Now, he is scheduled to be sentenced sometime next month. The technology Bittorrent was developed by programmer Bram Cohen and is totally open source in its nature. It was originally aimed at making it easier for the corporate and organizations to share huge software files without loading their servers during launches. However, it has instead become a great way to share and trade digitally protected content over the internet.

However, the technology is still preferred by organizations like Linux developers to let their consumers download huge Linux files from the internet.
