Gmail allows customization of IMAP connectivity

Google continues to add newer functionalities to Gmail through Gmail Labs.

The latest new feature is the addition of IMAP options.

Users get more power to customize the IMAP service provided for free by Gmail.

IMAP is one of the two most popular protocols to access emails through a software based solution like Outlook or Thunderbird.

The new feature enables the user to select the labels and sections accessible from IMAP.

This can come handy if the user does not want to get access to All Mail folder in Gmail on his software client.

There are some more options which enables the user to pick if the mails deleted inside the software application are deleted permanently online or sent to trash.

For some weird reason, we cannot enable the Chat folder to make it visible on Gmail IMAP through an email client. Google seems to have disabled that option.
