Mozilla Geode for Firefox launched
Mozilla has made available an add-on for Firefox web browser which enables the user to tell web services data about their location.
The add-on is named Geode and it brings Geolocation capabilities to the popular open source web browser.
The developers of this new experimental add-on said in the release notes: “You’ll be able to play with this in the upcoming beta releases of Firefox 3.1. We realized, though, that some of our Firefox 3 users might also want to get a head start playing with Geolocation today, and users can tell us what they think of the experience it provides.”
The plug-in uses several technologies to approximate the user’s location. This includes data provided by Bluetooth, cellular IDs, Wi-Fi and IP addresses.
Web services would be able to access this data to provide localized services to the visitors. Pownce is one of the supported services.
