Oracle acquires database technology developer Innobase
Leading database software solutions provider Oracle has acquired yet another company in their continues spree of acquisitions. The latest company to join the long list is the Finnish open-source database technology developer Innobase. The financial details of this deal have not been disclosed. Innobase develops add-on software for MySQL, an open source database software product.
The company is mostly known for their InnoDB, an add-on storage engine for MySQL. The software is distributed under the GNU GPL (General Public License) open-source license and is bundled with MySQL through a contractual agreement. This agreement is due to be renewed next year and Oracle expects this deal to continue.
Charles Rozwat, Oracle’s executive vice president in charge of database and middleware technology said in a released statement: “Oracle intends to continue developing the InnoDB technology and expand our commitment to open source software. Oracle has already developed and contributed an open source clustered file system to Linux. We expect to make additional contributions in the future.â€
Oracle in the recent past has acquired some potential competitors and popular names like PeopleSoft and Siebel Systems. They also expanded on their Indian operations by buying a majority stake in Indian banking software vendor i-flex Solutions.
