RealNetworks sued for their RealDVD application

RealNetworks is being sued by the members of MPAA over their recently launched software application RealDVD.

This lawsuit was expected when the application was launched as it enables the user to rip the protected DVDs on a hard disk.

MPAA claims that the application violates the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

Greg Goeckner, executive vice president and general counsel for the Motion Picture Association of America had this to say on the RealDVD application: “RealNetworks’ RealDVD should be called StealDVD. RealNetworks knows its product violates the law and undermines the hard-won trust that has been growing between America’s movie makers and the technology community.”

RealNetworks is claiming that their application falls under the “fair use” statutes of U.S. copyright law.
