The nuisance of using Yahoo! Messenger

Of all the instant messengers out in the market, I prefer Yahoo! the most. The reason being simple, it works. But well, having used it for so long, I have got used to certain things, which unfortunately Yahoo! is making me change. Here are some of the nuisance value created by the latest version of Yahoo! Messenger.

  • The Download Size: It has apparently grown with every version. Considering software like Opera Browser packs in so much stuff in just 3.5 Megs, a chat client for 4.7 Megs is just pathetic.
  • The Speed: Latest version in addition to introducing funky looking skins has made the software so bulky that it crawls on slow computers. Unless you switch to the classic skin, it mostly remains terrible to operate.
  • The Desktop Space: I have always preferred to have the smallest possible window for the messengers coz I have many of them open at any given time. Yahoo! Messenger in the latest avatar keeps a bulk of space empty at the bottom part where in generally Content Tabs appear. For god sake, let me have the power to resize my Messenger window!
  • Displaced Options: Earlier I could access the profile of a user using 2 keys, now its more complex as the options to view profiles and webcam have been buried another level deep to Contact > Contact Options. Bad, considering there are no shortcuts predefined. Even bad that I can’t specify manual shortcuts. What generation we living in? Also, I cannot find any option to join the current user I am talking to in a chat room. Maybe I am missing something.
  • False Buzzing: They added the buzz button to the toolbar. Earlier I found it fun, now it’s a nuisance. I want to click on the IMvironment tab and I accidentally buzz the user. I cannot recall how many times I accidentally buzzed people for no particular reason.

    Yes it sucks!
I have used Yahoo Messenger from its begining. I was a fanatik fan of it but now I just can’t handle it! I cannot support this stupid interface. I am a programmer and I am sure I can do a better interface for it.
It is unbelievable that I need to wait several (SEVERAL) seconds when I dbl click on an username in order to speak with him until the window appears. I have a Pentium 4 processor with 512 RAM with fresh WinXP SP2, but I think the delay comes from some internet related stuff. (altough I have 512k guaranteed bandwidth).
I fear that the next versions of YM will be worse! I don’t want to get nervous each day because of a stupid interface.
And.. YES! the stupid BUZZ button is put on a stupid place!

Messenger 7 seemed to keep taking control of my PC and freezing everything up, now I am no techy but the earlier version NEVER presented me with a problem the yahoo guys have just got it all wrong and now it is too late to fix it, deleted it from my pc and everything is fine again, now just got to up-load version 6 from somewhere, typical “POWERS THAT BE” idiotic decision : IT ISN’T BROKEN SO WHY THE HELL F@@K IT UP ?????

I thought yahoo had the best foolproof, stealth setting. I was wrong. You can easily find out if anyone is invisible or offline. Simply invite the person to a conference. Even if he cancels you get a message that he has declined to chat. So you know that he is online. Anyone has any fix for this?

I have been a long time avid user of Yahoo Instant Messenger but this new version 7.0 really sucks. I have complained to Customer Service regarding the fact that when I am offline I do not receive any Instant Messages even though the Archive feature is turned on. No fix to this yet. I also had an incident where my full last name was exposed in e-mail per Yahoo and it only should have been my User Name! Has anyone received a fix on this from Yahoo? If there is any way possible to get the old verion of Yahoo IM back, please let me know.

I am a long time avid user of Yahoo Instant Messenger also and have had a problem with their newest version of Yaho IM with Voice, Version 7.0 as I can not receive Instant Messages when I am logged off and never had that problem before this version. I have complained to Yahoo Customer Service and reply is they will look into it. That was two months ago. I’m missing messages and like another person out there, Yahoo exposed my entire last name in e-mail replys when it should have been showing only my User Name! Does anyone have a solution to block your entire last name since Yahoo has screwed up their website and has not corrected these two matters? I would love to get back the old Verion of Yahoo IM. Is it possible? I’ve tried but so far, no luck finding an old link . I’d appreciate any possible solutions for these problems.

If you have a lot of contacts then probably your message archive is very big, thus it takes time for it to load. It may take a few minutes to display the message archive once you clicked the Show message archive option and in this time yahoo is hanged, but if you let it finish, it will work.

I have the same problem with offline messages. They don’t show up anywhere… hope it will be fixed, I suppose there are server problems.

Happening over last couple of weeks. I login to friend using Yahoo Messenger. After about 10 minutes of trading messages satisfactorily, mine are no longer being received by friend. I still get his. (Most frustrating!) He logs off and then logs on again. My previously- forwarded messages arrive as if they were sent off-line. Everything is ok for a few minutes, then the problem reoccurs! Both using Messenger with Voice Ver 7. Anyone got any ideas?

David, same thing happening here too. Use YIM for about 25-30 minutes then it clogs like a blocked toilet. Stays that way for about another 25-30 minutes then all the messages come down in one go. If I log out and log back in before that 30 minutes has expired and YIM unclogs the missing messages are there as offline messages. Also, this seems to be linked with no alerts and sounds of people coming on and offline and the lack of the line under the type window that lets me know if someone is typing a message.

So, I can use YIM for half an hour then not for half an hour then can for half an hour and so on. It’s driving me insane. I have told Yahoo and they are “working on the problem”.

ok so as far as the people having problems with yahoo “geting clogged like a toilet” as it was put…I believe thats actually a computer issue not yahoo technically even though it is yahoos fault. only time i have that problem is if i have my cam on and am viewing a cam at the same time so i figure it has to be this new yahoo just uses to many resources. I think my biggest issue is that if you use an older version they try to get you to upgrade every time you log in and some older versions are no longer supported. when my wife was out of state for a while she had some issues and i sent her ver. 5.6 and she said that it wouldnt work cause she got a msg saying it wasnt supported anymore. I beta tested both ver. 6.0 and 7.0 and it turns out that yahoo doesnt listen to the feedback that they ask you to provide. i’m about to just stop using it completely. they took out the follow user and join user options in 6.0 and its just getting steadily worse. they made it a pain in the @ss to even view a profile anymore. and as far as those looking to run more than one yahoo a a time there is a program called magic login that will allow up to 6 at once but it doesnt work with anything past version 5.6 i think. I know for sure it dont work with 7.0 If anyone finds a version of ML that works with the newer versions a link would be greatly appriciated.

I think we should all start a low-level idea of not using Yahoo! anymore at all. My real name was also released onto the net and was a personal and career risk.

    Let’s all stop using Yahoo.

Let’s not forget about a strange message “You where disconected because you have logged in on a different machine”.

This made me to change my password but soon I realized that this is a stupid bug of YM which occurs when I have problems with my internet connection.

The clogging issue isn’t actually Yahoo’s fault. I use Gaim and thought that the clogging was Gaim doing it (or the use off too much bandwidth from other programs) so, i just installed yahoo, closed out anything that uses the net thinkin, everythings better, then, i’m talkin to my friend and it clogs for a couple minutes.

To remove your real name that is your first and last name from being exposed…..
….. Click on Contacts > Contact Details.

Odd that this info isn’t listed in the Yahoo Help.
I was irrate to find Yahoo did this on its own.

I also stopped receiving my offline messages when I went to 7. I have now upgraded to the beta 7.5 and I will say that Yahoo is not listening to this RSS Feed. The Messenger size is getting bigger, and while they added options to remove certain bars, the ones we find most problematic are worse.

But I will say that I still do not receive my offline messages, AND, it is NOT version 7 doing this. My girlfriend signs on to the same PC and the same messenger, she gets her offlines. This is a yahoo account/server problem somewhere that is causing this.

I just wish Yahoo Customer Service were more reachable and responsive, and well – caring. But free services are not high on their priority list for support.

Hiya pals, I got a problem my self, but then, while i attempt to solve your problems, can you al so suggest ways to solve mine? I have an old version of yahoo messenger, actually Version 4.0, 5.0 and 6.0, but, I’ll tell you something, i’v u’re not good at answering pop-up questions, you’ll end up upgrading to 7.0 or what ever will come after it. My problem is that i dont recieve offline messages. I’m wondering what the problem is. Can any one suggest the probable reason(s). For the Version 6, I can send it via mail to who ever is interested. Send a mail with the Subject “Y-messenger Version 6″ I may not read any other mail with a diffrent subject. State if you want it Zipped or sent as a plain executable. Note that you may not be able to download a plain attaced exacutable if u’re using some firewall softwares. My contact addy is bukyekaiko {at} yahoo(.)com. Hope Yahoo comes to our rescue.

Yahoo servers alloted for the YIM are the main reason for the constant signing out problems. They are allowing too many users ..much more than their servers can handle. So whenever a new user signs in .. a logged in user gets logged out.
    Screw Yahoo…use meebo.com for chatting

When I start up Yahoo Messenger 7.0, everything else stops, and my system resources drop from 91% to 68%. I loved the older version of yahoo but this is horrendous.

New yahoo = crap. ‘Nuff said.

At first, I’m enjoying using yahoo messenger 7 because we used it for communications for our relatives abroad. But after a month, I find it hard to signed in which makes me paranoid and feeling disturbed. I searched everywhere from the net for answers, suggests me for downloads; even the newest version of YM8. But YM8 cannot be installed to my pc(i don’t know why). After tons of searches, I found this article/comments section and based from all of your personal experiences, it leads me to download an older version of it and then I tried, and it worked!!! Thanks to all of you guys!!!This helps.
