Google collaborates with National Geographic for Google Earth
Anyone who has not used the Google Earth application has surely missed something really innovative. The virtual display of the earth in such impressive details is an experience in itself. Now Google is working hard on improving that experience as they have now collaborated with the masters of their own field National Geographic.
Google has now added new layers in the Google Earth with support from National Graphic. These layers add access to National Geographic stories, journals and a live webcam with Google’s satellite imagery. All these new features present an interactive virtual exploration of Africa.
This collaboration is part of the National Geographic initiative “Tracing the Human Footprint” special being underway this month. For this project, J. Michael Fay took as many as 92,000 high-resolution photographs of the African continent over a period of one year. In addition, Fay selected more than 500 scenes for annotation in Google Earth.
Google Earth CTO Michael Jones spoke about this new addition to their innovative application: “Across Africa, you will see the familiar yellow National Geographic logo. Zoom in to see the title of each feature article or photograph. Click the icon and a pop-up balloon shows a photo and description along with links to the content. Follow those links to read the entire story right where it happened.â€
