If you are planning to move from a POP/IMAP based webmail account to Google Apps, Google has just the perfect solution for you.

They have been providing this free utility named Google Email Uploader for the new users of Google Apps.

This utility is designed to help users get their old emails on the Google Apps hosted email account. The application also copies the contact database to the Google Apps Account.

It works with MS Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird application which makes it suitable for use with various email storage formats.

Unfortunately this solution would not work with a regular Gmail account. Users would need to have a Google Apps based email account.

Also, this solution is aimed at a single time migration. So, there are some issues if you want to use it for email backups. Overall, a pretty useful application.

This application is designed to work on Windows XP and Windows Vista. Other users have an alternative method to sync emails through IMAP. Not very automated but achieves almost the same results.
