Novell believes Windows Vista price would lead to Linux adoption

The popularity of Windows Operating System means that there is little scope for companies manufacturing and marketing the alternative operating systems based on Linux and other platforms. However, with Microsoft managing to do little innovation in the last couple of years, few corporate users have found the use of moving on to newer operating systems. In fact, reports claim that half of the corporate entities in the United States are still on Windows 2000 Operating System ignoring the upgrade to Windows XP.

With the world’s largest software company planning to launch Windows Vista next year, Novell believes that it is the perfect time to market competing products specially Linux which the company sells under the brand name SuSE. Novell CEO Jack Messman was speaking at the Novell Inc.’s BrainShare conference and expo in Barcelona, Spain and said: “The cost of migrating from XP to Vista will be higher than the cost of migrating to Linux and that will push migrations to Linux”.

They already have in the market SuSE Linux 9 available in the market and due to launch the next version SuSE Linux 10 next month. Novell believes that with SuSE Linux 10, they have made an operating system capable enough to lure users into switching from the windows platform. In fact, they are planning to target the corporate users into moving to SuSE when they decide to upgrade from their existing infrastructure.

Novell CEO believes that by moving to Linux, corporate entities can free themselves from the monster Microsoft has become. They are held hostage to the company’s plans and have to frequently upgrade their systems with numerous security patches Microsoft have to release to fix the bugs and flaws in their operating systems. With Linux, they get a more rugged and cheaper alternative to Windows platform, which in spite of all its shortcomings continues to power more than 90% of this world’s computers.
