Microsoft Windows Vista might have seven variants

We are to believe a Windows enthusiast Web site operated by Paul Thurrott, the much-awaited next major update of the Microsoft’s Operating System Windows Vista might have as many as seven versions. This would be a personal best for the company, which has until now released 2-3 versions of their previous operating systems.

Paul Thurrott is a noted online reporter who has an impressive track record of releasing Microsoft related news on the internet. He says that Microsoft plans to release as many as seven different SKUs (Stock Keeping Unit) of their upcoming Windows Vista Operating System. This OS is expected to come to the retail market sometime later next year and would be the first major upgrade since the Windows XP launch a couple of years ago.

As per the website, Vista’s versions will be divided into two broad categories — Home and Business, which would be similar to “Home” and “Pro” divisions within Windows XP. Home division would have versions like Vista Starter Edition, Vista Home Basic Edition, and Vista Home Premium Edition. While the Business Edition would have Vista Professional Edition, Vista Small Business Edition, Vista Enterprise Edition, and Vista Ultimate Edition.

Their might be more variants released on a later date in the form of Media Center and Tablet PC based on the Microsoft Vista platform.
