Gmail in Hindi

Google has finally added support for the Hindi language which we at TechWhack are not sure how many people would indeed use. However, Google has done a nice job and the interface (at least much of it) can now be viewed in the Hindi language. Of course, writing mails in Hindi in Gmail is still not quite possible. Google has been supporting Hindi language on their popular search engine since quite sometime.

Google has also added many other languages for their Gmail web mail service including Catalan, Czech, Estonian, Lithuanian, Romanian, Tagalog, Thai, and Turkish. And in total Gmail now officially supports a massive 38 languages, which is quite impressive statistic in itself. This becomes crucial for people who like to view sites in their own languages and not mail global services are so flexible in their approach.

Google had also recently launched their Gmail Notifier for the Macintosh platform and is rapidly expanding their support for various platforms. What we would like is the official support for the WAP platform for Gmail from Google. They have also added the Gmail support on their Google Toolbar where users can visit Gmail from the toolbar itself and also search for their mails from the search box. However, there is no mail alert facility on the toolbar, which should come soon too.

And with Google launching the Google Desktop 2 recently, they have also enabled Gmail indexing by that tool which in the end helps the users to search their mails offline…

I expect Indian regional language support. If Google puts effort, it should not be difficult for them to add language supports like Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Bengali, Marathi, Malayalam…. Since Google search is already available under Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Bengali,… It should be easy for them to support menus and other options in these languages. Mail writing and reading in my own language is all that I expect from Google at the earliest….

This is another step forward for Google which would take google mail to the masses. Considering the sheer number who communicate in Hindi, this should be a godsend for the millions. I feel Google is not all that aggressive with its India plans vis a vis China. Hopefully this would change soon.
