Google Chrome would get Firefox like add-ons

Google Chrome is out and it has been well accepted as the latest challenger in the web browser war.

Mozilla Firefox remains the favorite mostly because of the add-on feature which enables the user to extend the capabilities of the browser by adding third party tools.

Google Chrome while being an open source offering lack any such feature at the moment.

But Google is definitely working on an extension API which should allow third party developers to code features that could work on top of Chrome.

Google representative Sundar Pichai has been quoted as saying: “We don’t have that in the beta today, but we definitely plan an extension API. It is one of the things we will get to next.”

It would be interesting to see how Google would react to potential future add-ons like AdBlock which enables the user to surf the websites with all advertising disabled.

Google’s primary source of income is online advertising and they might restrict any such possible add-ons for Chrome.

I do believe, they [google] will never allow blocking of their main income earner. A pity, in a world of open-source but let’s see what happens.

Yet another browser, I don’t think we need another browser. Firefox is perfectly fine and has all the addons you will ever need. Just what the Firefox addon creators need, to port their addons to yet another browser, and not spend that time making their addons better…

FireFox is great, but it is not exactly fast, or crash proof. I think another browser is a good idea, but fail to see how Google can restrict the creation of ad blocking if they allow third party addons. This would go against their ideals of freedom for the user.

The reality is that most users just put up with adverts, it’s only the super users who bother to install AdBlock, etc. so I don’t think Google will be arsed about it.

I disagree, the more browsers the more competition and we all know what happens when you don’t have enough competition, just look at Microsoft. Its browser is getting a lot better since Firefox and Opera took off, same with its OS since Linux and Apples OS has gained popularity. Also I love Firefox but it is a fairly heavy browser especially when you start downloading its addons, it can take up a lot of the CPU. So I think its great to have more competition especially from the open source community

if google launches extensions, they would have to make available an online repository to offer it to the chrome users.

so it remains to be seen if they would control the apps to be hosted on this repository just like apple does with app store.

You can’t control open source. If google somehow blocked ad-blocking addons, somebody would just fork the code and undo google’s restriction — which is why google won’t even try to stop it

Yep, we’re at least going to need something like GreaseMonkey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greasemonkey).

I hope it doesn’t go the way of Netscape.

more is better. i don’t like firefox, hate ie, and i am slowing losing my faith in opera. maybe it will become a more complete and fine browser in the future. for a beta version is very promising.

Well I dont think google has a problem. The adblock plugin lets through the text ads like the ones google displays. Adblock plugin only blocks ads that really come in the way of your surfing. So google has no problem. Moreover, google can keep changing the ad extensions to fool the adblock addon every now and then :)

Guys, “Meh” already said what’s going to happen.

“You can’t control open source. If google somehow blocked ad-blocking addons, somebody would just fork the code and undo google’s restriction — which is why google won’t even try to stop it”

It’s true and logical. If you’ve ever REALLY used FireFox you’d know this.

google text ads are ok to me because they don’t irritate, like flashings and popups. and yea firefox is beginning to get on my nerves and ie’s good as dead. so chrome’s my browser of choice for now.

if a company can come out with things such as gmail, the gears(google gears), google desktop, google search itself, the promising android etcetera etcetera… it’s hardly a surprise that when it gets into browsers it will do something to rule the roost…(which it has rightly done with chrome)
ads are not a matter of concern here…maybe they will launch an adblock of their own which will block all ads but googles own…
i agree with exzede but if they do not include the adblock in their repositories and include their own adblock 90% would use the one in the repositories…
the point is that google chrome is the most promising browser with its amazing speed and efficiency and i see IE as dead and mozilla as half dead as soon as the full version of chrome is launched.

I believe I saw it in google chromes own forum posted by a rep that while the adblock goes against company philosophy (or something of that nature) when they get the API out they won’t have any restrictions for what the user wishes to add to their browser
