eBay interested in acquiring Skype

One of the world’s largest e-commerce companies eBay is rumored to be talking with Skype, the company that revolutionized VoIP based software on the internet. The news has been reported by the Wall Street Journal who were also the first one to report about the Apple’s decision to move to Intel microprocessors from IBM’s PowerPC platform. The deal between the companies can be worth a lot of money. The report puts the figure to be between USD 2 Billion and USD 3 Billion.

However, if eBay indeed is successful in purchasing Skype, they would have to dramatically alter their business structuring to involve it in their other projects. However, the reports also say that the talks are in very sensitive stages and can fall apart any time. Therefore, there are no guarantees of it happening anytime soon.

None of the involved parties, eBay, or Skype has officially commented on this news story published in one of the most respected news magazine in the world. Skype is based in Luxembourg and provides software solutions to users to let them talk with anyone with an internet connection. For a fee, they also have services enabling people to use their computers to call regular telephones to talk with their friends and relatives.

Their have been reports of many big players trying to acquire Skype but none of them went through. However, with the entry of Google in the VoIP market with their Google Talk application, the situation seems to have changed dramatically and the developers of this application just might take the safer way out by joining a group as big as eBay.
