Novell showcases SuSE Linux 10

Networking applications, giant Novell has announced the latest production version of their flagship Linux distribution SuSE Linux in its latest version 10. The company expects to launch the retail version in the market sometime early next month. This update from the company has been long awaited and is the first one to release after Novell formed the openSuSE project.

OpenSuSE project was started by Novell to bring in more volunteer developer input to handle the development of the SuSE Linux in a similar way to other open source applications like Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird. This latest release from the company would come with major code changes and bug fixes “initiated with developer input from across the worldwide Linux community” as per a statement released by the company.

The SuSE 10.0 Linux distribution would come preloaded with popular Firefox browser, e-mail, instant messaging clients, security tools including spam blockers and an integrated firewall, a desktop search engine, and the OpenOffice.org 2.0 business suite. The latest version of the OpenOffice is yet not released and the final release of SuSE Linux 10 might include a previous stable version of this office suite.

Novell is targeting the Microsoft Windows users with this latest release of their Linux distribution and the installer would give the users the option to switch to Linux completely or install it along with their windows installation to make it a multi-boot operating system environment. The latter style would not interfere with the Windows installation and the user can use Linux to get a feel and decide whether he wants to move onto it completely.

The company says that the expected retail price of SuSE Linux 10.0 would be around $59 compared to the currently sold SuSE Linux Professional 9.3, which is available for around USD 100.
