Google launches Gmail Notifier for Macintosh
Google normally ignores the Macintosh and Linux based users when it releases its micro applications. Google Desktop Search and Picasa are two of the best examples of excellent applications launched for the PC platform but still unavailable on a Mac. However, things seem to be changing as the company has just released the Gmail Notifier for Mac OS including the recently released Tiger Operating System.
The application as usual is a beta release and connects the desktop of the Mac user to the Gmail servers on the internet. It alerts the Mac OS X users on when they have new and unread email through an icon on the computer’s system tray. It also shows the subject of the mail in addition to the snippet from the content of the mail just like its PC’s version.
The best part is that the information is available to the user without opening the browser so he can continue with his work if the mails are not important. Such applications are crucial to the Google’s strategy to counter the popularity of the Microsoft products in the market considering they bypass the requirement of using Microsoft products like the Internet Explorer web browser.
Of course, the users of Google Talk for Macintosh application would not use this application because it already comes with an internal Gmail Notifier. Google on their part have said that this is the first but not their last software release for the Macintosh platform. Let us hope, they adopt Linux too for their software releases…
