Google opens GMail to all… Well Almost!

Google GMail is more than a year old phenomenon. However, even after such a long time and massive popularity, Google has still kept it in beta stage. Invites are still required to get access to a GMail account. However, the company has taken a step, which theoretically opens GMail to all. Though, it is not convenient for everyone.

To be signed in to GMail network without requiring an invite, you have to sign up for GMail over a US mobile phone, using SMS. This would result in an invitation code from the company within a couple of minutes. Google promises to never reveal or sell your phone number to any third party thought they would keep the number in their database to prevent multiple signups from a single number. They are letting users sign up as many as 10 accounts with one phone number.

This latest news is expected to further raise the privacy concerns considering Google is seriously investing in mobile services and might use this as a medium to target its audiences. The step makes one think that the company still wants to continue testing the services with their limited audience and with the sms based signup prevent junk accounts made using scripts and bots.

However, we as GMail users have been really impressed by it and plan to use it in long term especially after the added ability to send mails using third party mail ids!
