Skype opens up to face competition from Google Talk
Google launched their instant messaging solutions this week in the form of Google Talk. The application is minimal in its approach but features something, which might mean an end for the company, which revolutionized VoIP on the Internet. Skype is one of the companies which might face a big deal of problems with the launch of Google Talk as the application allow users to talk with each other on the net. And from the reports, the first version from Google does a good job.
Therefore, to stay up at the top, Skype has taken a decision, which would cheer up a lot of people. The company has now opened up their technology to be built into Web sites and software applications such as music playing programs and multiplayer online games. The news came just hours after the launch of Google Talk and seems to be related to it. The company has launched SkypeNet and SkypeWeb initiatives, which the company believes, can be fully integrated in Web sites and software programs.
They have an advantage in this aspect considering the company basically develops technology and does not need to get the users to their website. Google, Yahoo!, and MSN are basically web-based companies, which earn mainly from the visitors to their websites. This enables Skype owners to let their technologies be available from third party sites as long as they are paid for it.
Skype co-founder Janus Friis said in a statement: “We have potential, as the only IM Company focused on communications and as a result of our fast growth. We’re very happy with our prospects as a standalone company. We’ve always meant this company to be for the long run. We’re investing heavily in our infrastructure.â€
