Firefox 3.1 set to support Ogg Theora and embedded video
Mozilla has said that they are working on adding support for open-source video in the next edition of Firefox web browser.
Firefox 3.1 is likely to come with support for a new HTML tag specifically for embedding video in Web pages in addition to royalty-free video codec Ogg Theora.
With this, web publishers would no longer be required to use Adobe Flash, Apple QuickTime or Microsoft Windows Media for delivering videos on the web.
This would make it easier for end users to play a video without downloading any of the additional codecs. It would also be easier for publishers as they would be able to use free software and simpler coding to publish their videos.
Opera is also working on support for this technology and some builds are already available. Microsoft on the other hand is likely to behave like they have always been. No support planned for now.
