Internet Explorer 7 to fail Acid2 test

First of all, what is Acid2 test? It is a test case designed to “push the limits of HTML, CSS, and PNG support in browsers and authoring tools”. Web Standards Project developed it for the browser developers to test their browsers against and it was an evolution from their earlier project called Acid. It is designed to easily display any possible web page rendering flaw in the web browser used for rendering. However, it still does not contain all the possibilities which are to be cleared to be fully compliant to the latest web standards.

The page is designed to showcase a smiley face if all the tests required by the Acid2 Test page are passed by the browser. Till date, only the latest builds of Safari and Konqueror manage to pass it along with reports of iCab also nearing perfection. Opera comes close with Firefox and Mozilla developers also trying hard to come as close to perfection as possible. Internet Explorer in its current form is almost a disgrace to the whole concept.

The latest news in is that the developers from Microsoft working on the Internet Explorer 7 have said that the final version of this web browser won’t be able to pass the test. In a post made on the Blog representing the team, they say that: “We will not pass this test when IE7 ships. We fully recognize that IE is behind the game today in CSS support. We’ve dug through the Acid2 test and analyzed IE’s problems with the test in some great detail, and we’ve made sure the bugs and features are on our list — however, there are some fairly large and difficult features to implement, and they will not all sort to the top of the stack in IE7.”

The news would come as a disappointment to the fans of the web browser and people looking forward to strict compliance to the standards from the upcoming browser from Microsoft, which just recently released a beta of the product.

The Acid 2 test is not meant to show all possible rendering flaws. Such a test would need to be countless times larger than the Acid 2 test is. It's simply meant to expose some known rendering flaws that make cross-browser development difficult, and also to show the lack of support for popular features.

Safari and Konqueror (which share most of the same code for their rendering engines) already pass the Acid 2 test in the latest public builds. iCab also reportedly passes the Acid 2 test now. Opera is getting close, and Firefox will likely pass it or come very close in version 2.0 (the next major version after the soon-to-be-released 1.5).

Internet Explorer is apparently finally starting to make progress in the field of standards support, but IE7 looks to still be years behind the competition. The Acid 2 test is a difficult test for modern browsers; it's ridiculously difficult for Internet Explorer as it currently is. I agree with Microsoft's decision to start on the more basic features before putting focus on completely passing something like Acid 2.
