Microsoft reports great sales of Windows XP Starter Edition

Microsoft is the world’s largest software company and also one of the biggest victims of software piracy. This made the company release a cheap version of their popular Windows XP operating system that came with limited features but cost very little. It is called Windows XP Starter Edition and it costs fraction of what it would cost to buy an original Windows XP package.

The company reported this week that they have already sold more than a lakh copies of this software. This would come as a surprise to market experts who have believed that the OS still is expensive for what it offers. There is very limited support for hardware and its feature restriction sounds stupid for a practical environment.

The company revealed these figures at the company’s yearly meeting with financial analysts on Thursday. The company has also expanded the number of countries it is selling this Operating System in. it began in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand and later expanded it to Brazil, India, Mexico and Spanish-speaking Latin America.

The company seems to happy with the performance as they are getting good number of sales with this product targeted at low per capita income group families. The OS is shipped with computers, which are sold by the dealers. The company also took some serious steps this week to get people to buy original software by locking down software download sections on Microsoft website to only those people who owns an original copy of Windows Operating System.
