Netscape releases Netscape Browser 8.0.3.1

Netscape has released another security update of their latest browser update and the latest version now stands at Netscape 8.0.3.1. This patch was the fix two “critical” security flaws in its rendering engine and another patch is due soon which would be fixing a couple of more minor security issues with the browser release. Netscape spokesperson Andrew Weinstein said while announcing the update: “There were a few dozen other bug fixes that occurred in that [update] as well”.

One of these two fixes is related to a hole found in several media players, such as Flash and Quicktime, and how they open JavaScript URLs within the browser. This security flaw could have been used by hackers to run malicious code that collects personal information from the user’s computer. The second fix is related to shared function objects. These components could have resulted in allowing Web content scripts to locate a privileged object and then execute malicious code.

Their were other minor fixes related to the rendering engine of the Firefox browser which Netscape uses in addition to the Internet Explorer engine. The company has confirmed that the patch would be rolled out immediately on all the installations with automatic update facility. The company recommends that all users of the previous version of Netscape Browser should upgrade their browsers as soon as possible.
