AOL Mail to open to third party developers
AOL has announced that they would soon let third party developers to code applications for their mailing services.
Developers would be invited to code applications and content. This could include new features like instant messaging or social networking.
AOL representative Richard Landsman spoke about this new development: “We are opening up the panel architecture in Web suite, which is the content portion of Web mail, to third-party developers by the end of this year. Once that is opened up, technically, there is no reason why somebody cannot create some other IM mashup or some other IM client that can be plugged in there.”
AOL has incidentally already opened up their instant messaging platform AIM to third party developers.
The company added that they are using Microsoft Silverlight technology to further enhance the capabilities of their emailing platform.
