“The Church Of Mac” Takes Love Of Apple To Religious Level

Ex-Apple Employee Becomes Pseudo-Church Leader; spoofs TV evangelists and technology. Former “Mac Genius” Tony Edwards has taken the sometimes fanatical love of the Apple Inc. to it’s logical conclusion by creating “The Church of Mac”. Edwards portrays the fictional character, “The Reverend Doctor Bobby Newton”, whom he describes as “a mash-up of Stephen Colbert, Dr. Michael Beckwith (of Oprah fame) and The Onion.”

Los Angeles, Calf – Former “Mac Genius” Tony Edwards has taken the sometimes fanatical love of the Apple Inc. to it’s logical conclusion by creating “The Church of Mac”. Edwards portrays the fictional character, “The Reverend Doctor Bobby Newton”, whom he describes as “a mash-up of Stephen Colbert, Dr. Michael Beckwith (of Oprah fame) and The Onion.”

Edwards’ website, features a series of video iPodcasts, in which “Dr. Bobby” gives computer advice to “brothers and sisters in Apple”, leads them in the recitation of “Steve’s Prayer” and invites Mac users worldwide to sing Apple hymns with “The Church of Mac Gospel Karaoke”. Although Edwards is no longer associated with Apple, the podcasts have been approved by the company and are freely available at the iTunes Store.

Before working for Apple, Edwards built a career in show business as an actor, stand-up comedian and writer. He has appeared in such TV shows as “Seinfeld”, “Roseanne” and “Family Matters”. His feature film appearances include “Starman”, “Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, “Hollywood Shuffle” and “Hot Shots! Part Deux”.

“My experiences in show business as a writer/performer and working as a Mac Genius for Apple have led me to this nexus, compelling me to create Dr. Bobby and ‘The Church of Mac.’”, Edwards explains. “My mission is to entertain and to inform. And, if I get a few people to switch over to Apple in the process, all the better.”

Edwards says that he has not yet heard from Apple CEO Steve Jobs about “The Church of Mac”, but hopes that Jobs will find the humor in what he is doing. “Steve is really my inspiration. In a commencement speech he gave at Stanford University, Steve said, ‘You’ve got to find what you love.’ Well, I love making people laugh. And I love using Apple products. Really, how could I do anything else?”
