AOL Mail to give out 2 GB webmail space
Talk about doing way too little way too late. AOL has decided to jump into the free web based email service and they have decided to directly take on GMail with a 2 GB space offer. AOL is owned by the mega corporation Times Warner and they would be offering this 2 GB webmail service with antivirus protection and spam filters.
It would form an extension of the popular AOL Instant Messenger, as AOL would be trying to get leverage out of their popular messaging solution. This would allow the users to use same user ids for both chatting and emailing each other. They have also improved their pre-existing premium email service with around 80 million subscribers getting access to unlimited storage space.
The competition in the form of Microsoft’s MSN Hotmail offers just 250 Megs, Yahoo! offers 1 GB, Google’s GMail is offering more than 2 GB webmail space, which is constantly increasing by the minute. However, the point to consider is… how many people would be interested in moving over to AOL’s Email solution when they would already have functional mail ids at a lot of places.
Personally speaking AOL’s free webmail service has nothing extraordinary to offer to me to get me off my GMail account!
