Microsoft Eiger for older computers
Microsoft sometime back announced plans to release a stripped down version of their Windows XP Operating System for tackling piracy in the third world. The aim was to launch the most cost effective solution for the countries with people having lower standard of living. Now, they are aiming for the lower specification computers with a new product reported to be under development.
The Operating System is codenamed Microsoft Eiger and the company aims to fulfill the wishes of those companies, which cannot upgrade their older generation computers to run the latest versions of the operating systems from the company. The company no longer supports older Operating Systems like the Windows 98 and Windows NT and there might be critical flaws unresolved. This makes it necessary to look towards the new solutions.
Most of these corporates generally look towards the alternate Operating Systems where Linux comes as the top choice. With Eiger, Microsoft wants to remove that option by offering an Operating System equipped with latest security updates and look and feel like Windows XP but low on resource requirements.
The operating system would run a bare bones set of programs directly from the desktop including the web browser and security applications. Rest of the application would be accessible from a central server.
The company has released a test version to a selected number of clients and has yet not released any details on the availability and pricing of the final product.
