SIPtap: Experts show that VoIP calls are not that safe

Industry experts have now shown technologies which can be used to eavesdrop on VoIP calls. This could become a major hassle for corporate who are moving (or have already moved) part of their telephony networks on VoIP technology.

They demonstrated a proof of concept software named SIPtap which is capable of monitoring multiple Voice-over-IP (VoIP) call streams.

It is even capable of saving these voice calls as files on a computer. An intruder just needs to get into one machine on the network being used for VoIP communications.

The experts however said that the hack would perform best if it is implemented at the ISP level.

The demonstration was shown by UK-based VoIP expert, Peter Cox. He is working on launching his own VoIP consultancy company.
