Symbian: Google Android is just another mobile platform
Google has just announced their Android mobile platform which would take on existing players in the market including Microsoft Windows Mobile and Symbian.
Symbian CEO Nigel Clifford spoke about this new development: “One of the reactions is, it’s another Linux platform. There’s 10, 15, 20, maybe 25 different Linux platforms out there. It sometimes appears that Linux is fragmenting faster than it unifies.”
He added that the entry of Google in this market is a good thing especially considering the open nature of their platform.
However he still warned: “But I probably would say there is no such thing as free software.”
Symbian would become one of the major rivals to Google mobile OS in the market as mobile devices powered by Android starts appearing in the market starting next year.
HTC has already announced that they have been working on a product based on this new platform. They are going to launch products starting the mid of next year.
