Google GMail capacity counter still going strong

Google seems to be serious about their Infinity+1 claim as their counter on the homepage of GMail webmail service is still running strong. At the time of writing of this article, it was quite close to reaching 2059 Megs. The speed has of course slowed down a lot compared to the speeds on April 1. This is on expected lines as the company announced their plans of immediate upgrade to two Gigs and more in the coming days for the users of the GMail service.

Even at this slow rate, the capacities are of course being increased at continuously. And if we assume this keeps on going on, we would in fact see something we can call infinite storage. The company officially has not announced any plans on when they would stop the counter or anything.

It would be however quite interesting to think about what competition would be planning to do. Yahoo! Mail is already reached one Gig storage, which happened in three installments. Microsoft is stuck with 250 Megs. People seem to be loving the concept of Google’s unlimited storage mechanism as it can be observed online in the news media and thousands of personal Blogs.

The results are quite apparent, as Google’s masterstroke has practically taken the media and the competition by surprise. And we can only think of the unlimited possibilities this market has with innovative players like Google involved quite actively.

The counter will stop on around April 9th, with an amount of storage equalling 2075 MB(unless Google decides to update the page before then…). You can find this out by looking at the JavaScript on the page.

It already is infinite. If you only get a certain amount of email every day, it will keep up with what you get.
