Corporations going slow with Windows SP2 Upgrade
Research firm AssetMetrix released a report on Monday, which says that corporations are going slowly with the upgrade to the Service Pack 2 of the Windows XP Operating System, which the company released quite sometime ago. From April 12, the automatic update feature of the Operating System will automatically start to enforce the upgrade on user’s computers. That would definitely lead to the increase in the number of computers updated with these essential security upgrades.
AssetMetrix studied around 251 corporations based in the North America with the total capacities of around 131,000 computers. Microsoft has given the companies enough buffer time to upgrade to their latest service pack, which was aimed completely towards making the world’s most used operating system more secure. However, research suggested that just 7% of the studied companies actively adapted their computers to the SP2 update. Even worse is the fact that around 40% of the companies actively avoided the update.
Rests of the companies were quite neutral and had no direction or policy towards the Service Pack 2. These companies might face issues in the future as they may find their corporate computers having different variants of the same operating systems. Microsoft as a policy will not be forcing the users to upgrade to SP2. However, most of the upcoming updated applications from the software giant would work only on the SP2 enabled versions. This includes the upcoming Internet Explorer 7 update. In addition to that, Microsoft would be ceasing the support for the Service Pack 1 for the Windows XP Operating System in September 2006.
That is however still more than a year away…
