Google updates GMail to work better in Opera Browser 8 Beta
Google’s GMail despite remaining in beta since its launch same time last year has become incredibly popular amongst its users. So much so that it is already reported to be one of the top-10 webmail providers in the world. That too in less than 12 months. However, users of the Opera Browser have had a love-hate relationship with Google GMail.
Initial launch saw very limited support for the browsers around. Internet Explorer and Gecko powered browsers were the one, which supported GMail in the early days. Opera users were completely blocked out. Slowly, Google added more support to the rather innovated GMail interface to include Safari compatibility and in the end; we saw a basic HTML version of the GMail which was made in a way that it supported even the most basic browsers.
Opera users managed to get access to GMail using some hacks and tricks. However, with the latest updates to the GMail, Google has finally given Opera its approval as the users of the latest Opera 8 Beta 3 noticed that they get the original GMail interface now by default. The current stable version of Opera (Opera 7.54u2) however is still redirected to the pure HTML based version.
However, everything is yet not perfect. The newly introduced Rich Text editing capabilities are missing from the version Opera 8 Beta 3 users get. As a result, even the forwarding of HTML mails lead to losing of all the formatting on the content. We expect things to get better as Opera reaches the final release of their browser in the coming months.

Logically 7.54 gets the HTML version, for it does not support XMLHTTPRequest. Now of course one doesn’t need XMLHTTPRequest to achieve what GMail does, but rewriting the entire application isn’t something I think they’ll do (although it would add in support for a whole lot more browsers if they did the same thing using an iframe, but anyway…)

With Opera ver 8 beta 3 there are still other issues:
– Sometimes the adverts display out of place (like over message).
– Colours from side bar of links don’t fully join up with the main viewing area.
Trivial I know but Google normally aim for perfection.

yeah. and sometimes the auto-filler address bar shows way away from the actual TO and CC and BCC boxes.

True. Also just remembered: for me the scroll bar on the right sometimes appears slightly into the page (i.e. too far left). I don’t know if this is the case for everyone.

i tried to use gmail russian language to mail this lady in russia a email, and how do i go back to regular gmail? i have all these little squares where letters should be and i can’t understand how to deprogram?
