Sun Microsystems showcases Sun xVM virtualization platform

Sun Microsystems has launched their virtualization platform named Sun xVM. This platform is technically a combination hypervisor and management tool.

They plan to make available this platform to customers starting this December. The system combines a server and the Ops Center management system.

Sun hopes to challenge VMware with this new service product. Marc Hamilton, VP of Solaris marketing said in a statement that they believe the market is big enough for several players to be in.

Sun added that xVM Server is based on the open source Xen hypervisor and it would come with a minimized version of Solaris.

The company said that the Version 1.0 of Ops Center is expected to be available in December.
