AOL Instant Messenger faces security glitch issues

Core Security Technologies has claimed that AOL’s Instant Messenger has a security hole which could allow hackers to gain control of a victim’s computer.

AOL claims that they have fixed the problem in the latest releases. But the experts believe that what AOL did was to block malicious programming code and other suspicious content from being transmitted to the IM clients.

And they believe that this is not enough considering hackers can find ways to bypass this filtering mechanism.

Core Security’s chief technology officer, Ivan Arce said in a statement: “That filtering mechanism, it doesn’t remove the bug from the IM client. It just prevents people from exploiting it. If someone finds a way to bypass the filter, the problem still exists.”

He further claims that their filter would be totally ineffective in case the two users ‘direct connect’ with each other to share files as this transfer would bypass the AOL servers.

He advices that AIM users avoid interacting with people who they do not know and follow standard practices like avoiding downloading suspicious files.
