Yahoo! Mail matches Google GMail with 1GB Storage Capacity

It all started on 1st April of last year when Google announced that they were planning to launch a webmail service that would come with 1000 megs storage capacity. It was quite amazing just 12 months ago to imagine a webmail inbox capable of storing so much data when competition in the form of Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail provided meager 2megs and 4megs storage space. A lot has changed since then.

Yahoo! expanded to 100megs and later to 250megs. Microsoft expanded MSN Hotmail directly to 250 Megs (though I am still waiting for my own account to be upgraded until now! It is still two Megs). However, the popularity of GMail meant… this increment is just not enough. Yahoo! felt this pinch and has upgraded their webmail storage capacity yet again to match GMail’s 1GB.

The company expects to roll out this update early next month and it should be done within 2 weeks. In addition, Yahoo! is also adding another functionality of removing viruses from the attachments coming in the Inbox of the webmail users. This functionality in the current form is only available to the paying customers of Yahoo! Mail. The paid users of this mailing service would continue to get 2 GB storage capacity as of now. Yahoo! might want to provide more value to these customers considering they are the ones which pays for availing the services from them.

The point in our opinion remains that the storage capacity no longer entices users into selecting a webmail service. It is the interface and the functionality, which matters the most. Google’s GMail interface is quick and responsive. Yahoo! on the other hand is cluttered with advertisements. Google’s mail searching and conversations are still unmatchable. However, Yahoo! excels when it comes to value added services. Though, Google is constantly working on matching that…

The point remains that any user interested in normal mailing facility would greatly benefit from staying with Google considering the POP/SMTP support is free at this moment. Yahoo! is more suitable for users looking for more. Like the Yahoo! Briefcase, Photos and Calendar. Google lacks these features.

I’ve Yahoo!’d and I’ve Google’d … actually I still do both. Yahoo! email can’t hold a candle to Google’s gmail. The article is right. It’s not about the storage capacity … it’s all about the interface and ease to file and retrieve email … and even get related ads. Gmail cant’ be beat.

Yahoo’s “Briefcase” still supplies only 30MB for file storage
(with free email accounts), which has become much less significant,
now that you can save emails with attached files instead.

Gmail can also now be used with any web browser, although
some functions require only a very recent major browser.

Right now Yahoo must be really hopeless since as of 1st of April, Gmail has increased its Gmail storage up to 2 GB. What a smart April Fool Joke for Yahoo. If Google launch its IM, Yahoo would be history for me! Oh, BTW, just want to say “go to h*ll” to Hotmail(Gaymail). Well, I’m DONE!

I like the fact of how organized Yahoo! Mail is. On the other hand, I like to have the space that Gmail has. Hope Yahoo! Mail will upgrade their accounts.

Would be great if either a) Yahoo increased the storage capacity on Briefcase to, say, 100MB OR b) Google developed a product like Briefcase… reason? .. Most corporations now block access to EXTERNAL email systems (Yahoo, Hotmail, GMail etc) PLUS have a limit of about 1MB on email attachments so the only way I can send stuff to myself is to use Yahoo Briefcase to upload… just a thought
