Apple acquires the Canadian firm SchemaSoft

Another news story first leaked on the Mac rumor site ThinkSecret got the seal of confirmation today when Apple announced that they are indeed going to acquire SchemaSoft. SchemaSoft is a small Canadian firm working towards developing applications, which can translate rival file formats. The company claims on their website that their utilities can handle various file formats used in popular office and graphical applications and convert them into other popular formats.

Apple provides similar functionality in their own office suite iWork suite. In addition, they also are an existing customer of this company along with rivals like Microsoft, Corel, and Adobe. Apple plans to incorporate technologies developed by the company in their future products to make them more compliant with competing applications and technologies.

SchemaSoft employs around 40 people and the new parent company has not announced any details on how they would be functioning under the new arrangement. This has been one of the few acquisitions from the Macintosh maker in the last couple of years as Apple has remained largely quite. They were quite active in 2002 in the market with their buying of companies like the Emagic, and Prismo Graphics.
