Microsoft releases a new range of Extenders for Windows Media Center
Software giant Microsoft has released a new range of Extenders for Windows Media Center. This would enhance the number of formats supported by Windows Media Center devices offered by several hardware manufacturers.
Cisco Systems Inc., D-Link Corp. and Niveus Media Inc. are now expected to launch a series of new set-top boxes next month that can play videos or music stored on a PC running the Home Premium or Ultimate editions of Windows Vista.
The new extenders include popular formats like DivX and Xvid. The upcoming devices are also expected to be capable of streaming “protected” high-definition (HD) video over the latest 802.11n wireless networks.
Microsoft is also planning to work with a broader range of vendors to incorporate these expanded capabilities directly into other devices such as DVD players and televisions.
