Eudora being developed as open source offering codenamed Penelope
Eudora was once one of the most popular email client. However, the software lost its user base as rival products emerged in the market.
It became tough for the software to sell after free alternatives became popular. Microsoft shipped their operating systems with Outlook Express, MS Office came with MS Outlook.
Mozilla Thunderbird is currently one of the most popular open source alternative for email clients.
Qualcomm gave away the application to the open source community earlier this year and the software is now being developed by the Mozilla community as Penelope.
The open source foundation has said that they are going to develop both Thunderbird and Penelope.
