LimeWire to become a legitimate music download store
Yet another file sharing service is going all legit. Lime Wire LLC has announced that they would turn their LimeWire software into a new music download service.
The software currently provides a peer-to-peer (P2P) networking service which is mostly used by web users to share and download pirated digital media.
Incidentally, the company is currently involved in a legal wrangle with the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
They could face fines of US$150,000 for every pirated song that’s downloaded using their service.
The company said that they now plan to open a legitimate music download store which would work through an independent website. It would also be accessible from inside the software.
IRIS Distribution and Nettwerk Productions have already announced their plans to support this new service.
Jesse Rubenfeld, Lime Wire Chief Financial Officer added: “We are delighted to collaborate with these forward-thinking music companies and sell their authorized content through LimeWire.”
