Sun to take on Linux with Project Indiana (Solaris)
Sun Microsystems has said that they are planning to release binaries for its OpenSolaris Unix platform in Spring next year.
This is similar to how the developers of Linux distributions release their products.
Sun’s release would be part of their Project Indiana. Ian Murdock, Sun’s chief OS strategist said in a statement on their plans: “Over the last five or 10 years, orders of magnitude more people in the world know Linux environment than know Solaris. This is a problem.”
Sun claims that the Project Indiana has been designed to combine the best features of both Solaris and Linux. It would feature the Solaris’ enterprise-class capabilities, innovation, and backward compatibility along with Linux’s distribution model.
Murdock added: “Even with open source, the binary platform is the key thing of value.”
